SUPER and SUPER SHRED TOURS
Super Tours are immersive tours that start off in the jungle but take you to sweet hidden artifacts, beautiful vistas, and also some more popular touristy attractions too. Super Shred Tours are also, but are designed for the shredders that want to experience true Okinawan mountain biking!
Yomitan Super Splore Tour
Our signature Yomitan Experience we call the Yomitan Super Splore and is 14 adventurous miles that start with a dirt road climb that delivers a gorgeous view of Maeda. From here we can dive down the farm roads to the coast, or take a mini side venture into a short hidden singletrack trail and check out an abandoned helicopter and mysterious tetrapods before going down to the Senaha Coast. At Senaha we get off the bikes to explore some historical structures in a large cave. From here we take a hidden back entrance to Zampa Lighthouse. Then cruise down the coast to Gala, making a few stops to check out curious features such as an old rock quarry in the ocean and the out at sea Mie Castle recreation. At Gala you can fuel up at one of the quality restaurants or check out some Yomitan crafts such as Ryukyu glass and pottery. On the other side of Gala is Murasaki Mura, a very popular attraction that has a bunch of traditional Okinawan stuff like live performances and craft workshops. Because there’s so much to see, do, eat, and drink in this little area, you may choose to end the ride here to enjoy the area at your own leisure. Guide will lock the bikes and depart to come back with a truck to pick up the bikes for an additional ¥1000 (per group, so 4 riders would split the cost!)
Time: 4 hours, up to 5 with lunch and shopping break
Price: ¥7000/person
ask about discounts if bringing a friend!
Package with bike rental: full suspension trail bike ¥10,000
retro or trail hardtail ¥9000
Physical level: Intermediate. Pace is slow and chill, but there are a few steep climbs.
Bike handling level: Low. Course can be done on a gravel bike or hybrid. There are options to rip around for mtb riders. If choosing the “tetrapods” route (where there’s tetrapods in the jungle) or to ride on the Mie Castle Bridge a mtb is recommended.
Zakimi Super Shred Tour
This sweet tour takes you to all the good bits on Gravel Loop such as the legendary Terns for The Worst, and then down some sweet backroads with the sweetest view, down to a sweet little coast with sweet little beaches, where you can take your sweet time, maybe even stop for a coffee and a sandwich, before going up and exploring Nagahama Dam (open on weekdays only) then up to Zakimi Castle where you get views and cutty little trail.
Time: 3.5-4.5 hours
Nagahama Dam Wall only open on weekdays, rest of route good any day
Price: ¥7000
Package with bike rental: full suss trail¥9000
hardtail trail ¥8500
Physical Fitness level: sustained climbs, some short steep ones, as always, we take our sweet time
Bike Handling Level: mostly low, but some challenges like small jumps and a difficult dh turn on Terns for The Worst. Zakimi Cutty trail also has a log to either jump or ride over. Walking is always fine!
Maeda to Observatory Super Shred Tour
My personal favorite! It’s also the funniest one to take locals on since they get so intrigued on how someone could just stumble upon such a sweet route. This one also has two options, when it comes to the “Historic Road”. If you don’t like stairs, we can skip it and cruise some super cruisy roads to a sweet ocean look out most people miss because you have to pay park here and it’s kind of a long walk (not a problem for us!), or we can smash down the Historic Road which is impossible to do without a smile! But if you have the time, and like to shred, we could do the Historic Road and still go to the cutty ocean look out and even explore Maeda’s crazy rocks. From there we connect to the Observatory Trail dh! You can stop at the cafe type thing at the bottom for some mango juice before making the one mile climb to the observatory. If you are super good with the bike you can enjoy a very wild dh descent starting from the steep top. But if not so much, the beauty of this trail, besides nature, is that we walk up from the bottom so we can spot all obstacles and the trail gets harder as you near the top so you can decide to leave the bike where it gets too crazy and continue up to enjoy the view. Opportunity for taking a peek at Gravel Loop too!
Time: 3.5-4.5 hours
Price: ¥7000
Package with bike rental: full suss trail¥9000
hardtail trail ¥8500
Physical Fitness level: mellow climbs, pretty good distance
Bike Handling Level: intermediate to advanced
Scenic Route
The Scenic Route is a classic mini route that is roughly 8 miles. Also starts with a dirt road climb, but turns back inland at the coast to access either (or both!) Senaha Beach Cave or Nagahama Dam (closed on weekends). Senaha Beach Cave requires an additional but short climb but is worth it! Aside from being my non swimming self’s (although snorkeling is an option here) favorite beach it also has a sweet cave that is very open and easy to explore. Nagahama dam offers a sweet and unique experience of being able to ride on top of and is a treat for shredders because of the sweet stairset descent. There is a bit of a brutal climb afterwards to get to Zakimi castle, but it’s through a very wide and scenic farm area. Then at the top of Zakimi castle you get another super cool view of Yomitan.
Time: 2-3 hours
Nagahama Dam Wall only open on weekdays, rest of route good any day
Price: ¥4000
Package with bike rental: full suspension trail bike ¥7000
retro or trail hardtail ¥6000
Physical level: slightly lower than intermediate. Chill pace, but short brutal climbs.
Bike Handling Level: low, but there are some opportunities to have some fun on an mtb such as staircases and a hidden trail.
Road to Maeda
This is a pretty special one that also starts on the Garbage Road, but the way down is far from garbage! A long pavement and gravel descent with a sweeeeeeet view the whole time. After passing Ferret Rock (does not look like a ferret) we can either take a paved road to the Maeda Blue Cave, or if you like history and have a history of shredding, take the “Historic Road” Kunigamiho-Sekai Road which is a green path with a few stair descents through a green tunnel and over the cuttiest little bridge. Once you return to civilization you could continue towards the Blue Cave and enjoy paved jungle paths. The ride back to the starting point is very gradual and easy. And we can link it to the Observatory DH trail!!!!!
Time: about 2 to 3hours. If linking to Observatory DH, 4 hours.
Price: ¥4000
Package with bike rental: full suspension trail bike ¥7000,
retro or trail hardtail ¥6000
Physical Level: pretty low! Just two mellow low-energy climbs that are scenic and enjoyable.
Bike Handling Level: Able to keep upright on road and gravel descents. Optional stair descent features (rigid hardtail not recommended!).
TRAIL TOURS
Trail Tours provide the full Okinawa mountain biking experience, except you’ll have a guide to deal with the spiders! But spiders aren’t the only friends of the forest. Okinawa’s wildlife is strong with mongoose, giant green pigeons, little pigs, and my favorite: the Ryukyu Swordtail Newt!
Observatory Trail DH (La Luge DH)
The Observatory trail experience starts from the bottom, where we push up from. Jungle DH trails can be tricky to pick lines so it’s highly advised to start this way to have a look at all the features, lines, and possibilities, but also for the guide to clear spider webs and downed branches. There will also be opportunities to take test runs on the tricky sections so on the big descent you can nail them. After about 30-40 minutes of hiking the bikes up, you are treated with what I believe to be the best view of Okinawa. You can see the skinny waist of the island and see both coasts. The DH plunge starts off steep and fast but mellows out a bit so you can get into your flow state. It’s an entire mile up and an entire mile down!
Time: about 1.5 hours per run (hike up, chill, ride down)
Price: ¥4000
Package with bike rental: full suspension trail bike ¥7000,
trail hardtail ¥6000
Physical Level: It can get tiring, but climb at your own pace.
Bike Handling Level: slippery clay, steep sections, small drops, ruts, puddles
Bike recommendation: Ideally, a 130-150mm full suspension bike but if you’re comfortable on a hardtail, totally doable with good brakes and tires.
Link from Road to Maeda Special Package:
combined tours, ¥7000!!
With full suss bike ¥9000!!
time: about 3.5-4 hours.
Gravel Loop
The gravel loop is a sweet little riding area where you can cruise around and develop your bike handling skills. It’s where most beginner level mtb rides are hosted. Also pretty cool area if you like to wonder about its past. There’s abandoned vehicles including a helicopter, and even a concrete stop sign! Most of it is abandoned road but with bits of dirt road and singletrack sprinkled in so it’s very repeatable for riders who want to learn new moves or perfect things such as braking technique and small jumps.
Time: one lap about an hour
Price: ¥3000 first 2 hours, ¥1000 per extra hour
Package with bike rental: full suspension trail bike ¥5500
retro hardtail ¥4500
Physical Fitness Level: low, initial sustained but mellow climb for about five minutes.
Bike Handling Level: very beginner friendly! And great for experienced riders to practice some skills or check out cool stuff.
Bike Recomendation: any mountain bike!
