Almost at our second year open, we have learned what sort of tuning packages suits the needs of our customers, whether they are just kids that need their bikes for school, or seasoned rippers that demand the most from their bikes. When you bring in a bike for service, you may specify a package or specific work, or if you’re not sure, we can have a look and go over the possibilities. And if you’re bike has a flat or air in your brakes going on, most of the packages also offer discounted rates for further service.

Safety Tune and Inspect ￥6000
Love and attention for inspecting and checking the build of bikes, whether it’s a bike you just got off Facebook marketplace or it just came out of storage and just need a few quick adjustments, or for brand new bikes that were not professionally assembled. In this package we torque down bolts and parts, make cable adjustments, turn limit screws, inspect the bike for additional service needs, and wipe and lube the chain. Disclaimer: many times this leads to a Basic Tune-up!

Basic Tune-up ￥9000
Dial in drivetrain, brakes, headset, hubs and go over and inspect the whole bike. Basic cleaning of drivetrain parts and lubing. Entire bike receives a spray and wipe. Wheels will be inspected and tensioned.

Shredder’s Yearly Tune-up￥24000
This is the package for bikes you have beat up on the trail and want to continue doing so. We are considering modern trail worthy bikes with sealed cartridge bearings and high performance drivetrains and brakes. In addition to all the services in the Basic Tune-up, we also refresh the caliper pistons, hubs, headset, cranks, bottom bracket, plus also perform lower leg service and inspection of forks. Tubeless tire sealant will be added. A full brake bleed is also performed.

Shredder’s Seasonal Service
This one is meant to service the parts of the bike you depend on, but forget about until they start to fail: suspension and dropper posts. 50hr service procedures are performed (lower leg service for forks, air can for shocks, upper wiper service for droppers), Safety Tune and Inspect, drivetrain brush and lube, and sealant top off. In the event something fishy is going on with your dropper post or other component and the result in not a properly functioning part, installation cost of a replacement will be waived!

Parts Removal/Installations

Oh yes, these get their own little section. These magical machines defy all conventional wisdom of what a bicycle is supposed to be. There are no hex holed fasteners, just soft cross heads and hex nuts. The bikes are meant to be built and maintained with a screwdriver, some vise grips, and grandpa strength. If something seems off, it just means you didn’t bend the bike enough. Nothing five years working in a busy San Francisco bike shop can prepare you for one of these. Only years of staring at things in a strange new land and saying “I guess so” can prepare the mind to take on one of these. And I have that.

Also worth noting that a lot of bicycles in this region may look like cross (hybrid bikes here are often called cross or even sports style bikes) or even mountain bikes, especially a lot of bikes for kids, but use mamachari tech and essentially are mamacharis not meant for mamas.

Mamachari Tune up
No one is asking for this service. But if you are, that’s great! I’ll have a look and see what needs to be done and give you a quote. There’s many things on these bikes that are not meant to be tuned or repaired. Not to say they are disposable, but a mechanic’s tune-up if they went all in would easily surpass the cost of one of these brand new. So let’s have a look and go over the reality and possible outcomes of your sweet bike.

Brake work
Front brakes are super simple on these, usually single pivot side-pulls made of stamped tuna cans. Pad adjustments only go so far on these. Want to guess how we normally tune these? Correct, we bend them into shape. It’s very precise work.
Rear brakes are simple in concept, and generally untunable besides the amount of cable pull. But if you did brake a cable and need it replaced, it’s surprisingly tedious, but we can do it!

Drivetrain work
Many are single speed but some do use 5 or 6 speed freewheels. Frames for these bikes rarely have a derailleur hanger tab so most derailleurs are secured by the nut of the solid axle. Sometimes basic tuning is all that’s needed. More often, something is bent and interfering with the path of the derailleur. And like a box of squirrels with an acorn in it, there’s a lot of parts sharing that nut. Fender struts, derailleur guard, extremely complex kickstand, and sometimes the chainguard, are all in the way and made of soft steel. Aside from tuning, you guessed it, we’re bending stuff to achieve results.

More complex due to axle mounted accessories that these tend to have. The real bummer though is the Dunlop valve (English valve).

A lot of times these come to the shop looking like they were found under a rolled over kei car, though actually they were just sneezed on. No problem, we’ll make it right!

Does yours have a motor?
That does complicate things a bit. But we can handle it! These will often have internally geared hubs which are awesome but if you need a new cable for it, that’s a little awesome since generally we have to figure out the length exactly, and often routing is complicated because of the electronics, and order that specific closed length. Removing a wheel on these is an epic procedure, even the front if it has a generator setup that requires disassembly.
Prices will vary on the situation but generally:

One more thing: batteries cannot stay overnight in the shop!!

Other Notes on Tuning
-replacing cable housing will normally call for replacing inner cables.
-bikes arriving with uninflated tires will have the tires inflated and inspected to assess condition of tire and tube.
-tubeless setups require two days at least to assure sureness of setup.
-plastic spoke protectors sometimes interfere with performance and may be removed if needed.
-bubble bleeds are only appropriate in some conditions and while may be initially performed, it is common for fluid to show contamination and call for a full bleed.
-disc brake pads being replaced often require resurfacing of rotors. Occasionally the rotors will need replacing too.

Service Process
-We write up with Notions. We send you a live link so that as we update the ticket you can see it too. This allows us to organize pictures and details in a very nice and clear way. But since it’s just online, you do leave the shop without a bike and anything saying you left your bike. So we do still use self copying slips just with less details.
-Bikes that need parts specially ordered do need to leave a cash deposit to cover the cost of parts.
-Payment in cash, JPY or USD, are preferred but credit card is happily taken as well.
-Payment in cash for labor services at least ￥9000 also gets you a free coozy!

After receiving a tune-up, book a Guided Ride and receive ￥1000 OFF !!!
